Laser Resurfacing – Acne Laser resurfacing for acne scars is the best option for those who really want improved, healthier and smoother looking skin. How does is work? Laser resurfacing is a process where the upper layers of the damaged or scarred skin are burned or vaporized by applying a controlled laser beam. The result is the production of new skin that is smoother and healthier in appearance. What type of laser is used for acne scar resurfacing? There are 2 types of lasers that are used for acne scar resurfacing: Fractional or Fraxel: Fractional or Fraxel laser therapy is an ablative laser but only a maximum of 25% of the damaged skin is treated at one time. This allows the skin to heal very rapidly, but due to the fact that only 25% of the area is treated, a minimum of 4 sessions are required. The results are not immediate but smoother skin will be seen after 2 – 3 sessions. Recovery time is 3 – 5 days of social downtime. Darker skin types can be treated by fractional resurfacing. Ablative erbium resurfacing: Full ablative laser resurfacing goes 3 – 4 times deeper than fractional resurfacing and treats 100% of the damaged skin in one treatment. Ablative laser resurfacing removes thin layers of the selected areas. The ablated skin is replaced by new skin that is smoother. The recovery time is from 7 - 10 days. Darker skin types can be treated by erbium laser resurfacing. What kind of results can I expect? Laser resurfacing or laser peels have become very popular due to the success of these treatments. Results however, of laser resurfacing are greatly dependant on the skill of the surgeon and the patient’s unique physiology. Therefore it is very important to have a qualified board certified cosmetic plastic surgeon as your physician.
