Acne is a common condition that 80% of teenagers and 54% of women over the age of 25 struggle with.

The effects of acne go far beyond the surface of the skin. The embarrassment and low self esteem along with social isolation, can be life altering. Young teenage girls with acne are twice as likely to be depressed as teenage boys. This despair and depression can last longer than the struggle with acne. Sometimes with life ending results!

In a new study, Swedish researchers have found a pattern that links suicide attempts in teens due to acne. The study confirmed that a third of these teens had made their first attempt before taking any type of medication and many suicide attempts took place 6 months after they stopped taking oral acne medication. When acne is a problem in both teenagers and adults, black moods and depression can follow and often continue even after the acne has been improved.

For moderate acne, Blu - light therapy is used alone or in combination with Levulan. This treatment is a safe, effective acne therapy . This unique treatment kills the P.acnes bacteria in your skin which causes the most common form of pimples and blackheads called acne vulgaris. The treatment is well tolerated and does not have the side effects of oral medication.

For teens with mild acne, Obagi Clenziderm acne therapeutic system penetrates to the root of the follicle and helps clear acne where it starts. The Clenziderm system is considered prescription-strength and is clinically proven to be as effective as antibiotics. Available only through physicians, results from using Clenziderm can be seen in as little as 2 weeks.

For adults with scarring resulting from the struggle of cystic acne, Dr. Marc DuPéré, Board Certified Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon, is the only physician in York Region to have the Sciton Contour Erbium Laser for skin resurfacing. Dr. DuPéré uses the Contour laser to remove thin layers of the skins surface, which will be replaced by smoother looking skin. Healing time will depend on the depth of treatment. Both the face and back can be treated. Post hypo-pigmentation is not a concern with Erbium resurfacing.
