| The Rhytidectomy or Facelift |
|
The rhytidectomy or more commonly known as the facelift is designed to surgically tighten the skin on the lower portion of the face and neck. The facelift restores youthfulness to the face by reducing major wrinkles and removing excess skin. At the Age-Less Clinic in Dr. Marc DuPéré MD, CM, FRCSC How do I know that I need a facelift? A facelift or rhytidectomy is for men and women who have significant skin sagging of the face and neck along with poor skin elasticity. The skin of the face has become loose, and the youthful shape and contours have disappeared. Wrinkles have increased significantly around the eye area, the cheeks look sunken and jowls hang from the jaw line. The neck skin is droopy and the muscles that used to be tight now hang down. Who is a candidate for facelift surgery? Any person with sagging facial skin is a candidate. However, since the facelift or rhytidectomy is a cosmetic surgical procedure, the health of the person wanting the facelift is more a factor than age. Facelifts are preformed on men and women well into their seventies, but it is necessary for the patient to be in relatively good health physically. At the Age-Less Clinic in Richmond Hill and Toronto, Dr. Marc DuPéré has a consultation with each person considering cosmetic facelift surgery. During your consultation regarding the procedure, Dr. DuPéré will discuss what you can expect realistically from the facelift procedure. He will also discuss the risks involved and what other options are available. Will a facelift remove the fine wrinkles around the mouth and eyes? It is a common misconception that a facelift will improve the fine lines around the mouth and eyes. These fine lines need to be treated separately either by laser resurfacing, wrinkle injections and fillers. Will the results after a facelift be natural looking?
Results that are natural looking are achievable. It requires an experienced and extremely well trained plastic surgeon such as Dr. Marc DuPéré. The facelift is very technique dependant and not all plastic surgeons have specialized in cosmetic or aesthetic plastic surgery. Dr. DuPéré fellowship training included an additional two years of aesthetic plastic surgery under the world’s top aesthetic plastic surgeons. This fellowship specialized in aesthetic surgery of the face, nose, breasts and abdomen. Will I need wrinkle injections or dermal fillers after a facelift? A facelift removes excess skin and tightens the underlying muscles of the face. Dermal fillers compliment a facelift by adding lost volume and to plump up areas that have lost facial fat such as the cheeks and lips. Wrinkle injections are used to soften lines of the forehead and around the eyes which are not removed by a facelift. Does smoking affect a facelift? The nicotine in cigarettes causes the tiny blood vessels in the skin to clamp down or constrict, which reduces blood supply to the skin. Complications caused by this can include poor wound healing, increased risk of infection, longer-lasting bruises, and raised, red scars. These complications are seen most often in facelifts done on smokers. Smoking must be discontinued at least one month prior to the surgery. How do I prepare for a facelift? If you are a smoker, you must discontinue the habit one month prior to the surgery. All substances that are considered blood thinners which include alcohol and wine must be discontinued two weeks before your surgery date. A list will be given to you by Dr. Marc DuPéré of what things to avoid. How much younger will I look? Facelift or Rhytidectomy surgery usually turns back the clock an average of 10 – 15 years. The clock is forever ticking forward and even though you are continuing to age, your face will always look better than if not having a facelift surgery procedure. Where does the facelift surgery take place? All surgeries take place in a private accredited surgical facility, with a board certified anesthetist and 2 registered nurses that are specialty trained for plastic surgery procedures. What does the facelift surgery involve? The facelift procedure involves a number of tiny incisions made inside the hairline in the temple area, in front of the ear, around the earlobe and behind the ear in the hairline. Dr. DuPéré designs these incisions to be inconspicuous as possible, placing them into the natural folds and lines of the faces. Once the incisions have been made and the skin lifted, the muscles and the connective tissues that make up the underlying structure are tightened. Liposuction is done to remove any fatty deposits under the chin and around the neck. When this is all completed which is usually takes approximately 5 hours, the excess skin is removed and incisions are closed with very small sutures. Other procedures, such as eyelid surgery, are often done at the same time as a face lift. What should I expect after facelift surgery? After have the facelift procedure, there will be some discomfort, but you will have received a prescription from Dr. DuPéré to keep you comfortable after surgery. There will be swelling and some bruising which will gradually dissipate over a few weeks. It is common to feel some numbness around the ear and near the incisions, which may take a few months to resolve. The first 2 weeks is a time where you will need to think about yourself. No heavy lifting or heavy exercise. Just rest, walking and eating well! Full exercise may be resumed six weeks after surgery. You will look much improved with 2 weeks and in most cases fabulous within 4 weeks.
